Organised by the Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC) and AAMC Foundation, the annual 2021 Art Curators Conference will be held entirely on a virtual platform, with no in-person components planned, from 29-30 April and 3-4 May 2021.
The programme will include live and recorded panels (anticipated between 12pm - 5pm ET), keynotes, and workshops, alongside networking and socialising opportunities. For our 2021 Art Curators Conference, our sessions will consider the meaning of the word identity. Our visual arts community’s interpretation, promotion, and usage of, as well as its reaction to and impact on the concept of identity, offers varied possible dialogues. In selecting this topic, we anticipate proposals addressing identity and its complex relationship to individuals, communities, historical groups and lands; its impact on cultural heritage and preservation; its role in colonialism, racism, and the transfer of power; the labeling of canonical histories; its influence in the marketplace; in matters of individual and group bias; in collection building and issues of provenance; in shaping the 21st-century museum; the physical and virtual; and others.
